Understand FCL and LCL sea freight to Kenya, when each option is suitable, and how cargo volume, timing and delivery plans influence the decision.
What is FCL?
FCL means full container load. The shipper uses a container for the consignment, which can be appropriate when the cargo volume justifies a dedicated container or when the shipper wants greater control over the container movement.
What is LCL?
LCL means less-than-container load. Cargo shares container space with other consignments and is consolidated for ocean transport. It can suit smaller shipments that do not require a full container.
Compare volume and urgency
The right choice depends on cargo volume, schedule, handling requirements and total landed cost. Sea freight generally prioritizes economy over speed compared with air freight.
Plan the Mombasa-to-destination leg
For Kenyan imports, the inland movement after port handling is an important part of the logistics plan. Confirm the destination, delivery access and any warehouse requirements before booking.
Get a shipment-specific comparison
Rather than choosing FCL or LCL based only on cargo volume, compare the full shipment costs and expected transit stages. A logistics provider can help structure the options around your actual cargo.
